CTS 10-12: Construction: Lesson Plans

This activity allows students the opportunity to explore materials used in architectural engineering and gain an understanding of their insolating properties. Students will research, design, build, test and improve a structure as to achieve the highest energy efficiency possible.

The lesson plans below were developed by teachers who participated in our Teacher Externship program, from 2009 to 2015, and are focus on the construction trade.

Over the course of approximately two 50-minute classes, students will become familiar with the basic concepts of sustainable building. They will learn which changes can be made to a building for the smallest upfront cost and what reaps the largest long term benefits.

This lesson will introduce students to the heat trapping characteristics of roofs and how the sun’s heat increases the urban “heat island” effect, substantially heating buildings.

In this activity, students are broken into small groups and assigned a “green city” that is taking a lead in environmental and social sustainability. After researching the characteristics and accomplishments of this city, each group presents their findings to the entire class.

This unit provides students with information about the actions a builder or homeowner can take to increase heating and cooling efficiency of a home while reducing dependency on nonrenewable sources of energy.

This lesson unit will introduce and examine the concepts of green building and green jobs by researching terms, methodologies and benefits of green construction and renovation.
